Dealer license in Los Angeles County

Get a Car Dealer License in Los Angeles

Los Angeles sits in Southern California. A sprawling metro market of independent lots, from the San Fernando Valley to the harbor cities. The license itself, though, is one statewide process — and our school runs it entirely online, so Los Angeles dealers prepare, certify, and file without a classroom trip.

The path in Los Angeles

Five steps from here to a licensed lot

1. The 6-hour course

Complete the DMV-required pre-license course online and earn your certificate (form OL 256A) — valid for one year. Our course is 360 real minutes of study across twelve sections, in English or Spanish.

2. The state exam

Pass the DMV's 40-question exam in person — 70% (28 of 40) to pass, $16 fee. Our free practice test mirrors its format so the real one feels familiar.

3. Entity and DBA

Form your LLC, corporation, or sole proprietorship, and file your fictitious business name with Los Angeles County — or statewide through our default filing flow.

4. Bond, Live Scan, premises

A $50,000 surety bond in your exact legal name, fingerprinting for every owner, and a real place of business that passes inspection — no residence, no post-office box.

5. The application packet

Assemble and file the DMV packet. Our Template Kit completes every form from one profile, with a consistency check that catches the name mismatches that bounce applications back.

Los Angeles questions

Local FAQ

Where do I file my fictitious business name (DBA) in Los Angeles County?

A DBA is a county filing, made with the county clerk where your dealership sits — for a Los Angeles lot, that is Los Angeles County. Our default flow files through the Los Angeles County online service, which accepts filings statewide and is fully online with e-signature; if any institution will not accept it, the system generates an identical local packet for your own county clerk, plus a short tutorial. Either way, your filing's five-year renewal date is tracked for you.

Do I have to take the course in person in Los Angeles?

No. The 6-hour pre-license course and the 4-hour renewal course are taken entirely online, at your pace, from anywhere — including Los Angeles. The only in-person steps in the whole path are the DMV exam, Live Scan fingerprinting, and your premises inspection.

What does the whole license cost, realistically?

Separate our prices from the state's. With us: the $125 course and, if you want the packet done for you, the $50 kit or guided setup at $1,499 / $1,999 — all planned launch pricing. On top of that come government and third-party costs everyone pays: the $16 exam fee, the bond premium (set by the surety on your credit), Live Scan fees, your county DBA filing, and DMV application fees. We publish our side of the bill; nobody honest publishes a single all-in number because the bond premium varies by applicant.

Is the course available in Spanish for Los Angeles dealers?

Yes — the full course is built bilingually from the start: learn in Spanish, with the DMV's English terminology taught as vocabulary, and test in English because the state exam is in English. There is no Spanish surcharge, and the free practice test above is available in Spanish today.
