Guide
The state exam is the gate between the course and the license: 40 multiple-choice questions, taken in person, 70% (28 of 40) to pass, $16 per attempt. You may attempt it three times, at least a week apart; a third failure means repeating the education program first. Here is what it covers and how to actually prepare.
The exam tests the same ground the approved pre-license curriculum teaches — our course's 12 sections map to it directly:
The exam rotates questions; a memorized answer key fails the moment wording changes. Read the material as prose — rule, reason, example — the way our course teaches it, and the questions become recognition instead of recall.
Forty questions, timed pressure, one sitting. Our free practice test runs the format with explanations for every answer — take it early to find your weak areas, then again before you book the real exam.
The state exam is administered in English. If you learned in Spanish, study the English DMV terms as vocabulary — that is exactly how our bilingual course is built, and its final runs in English with Spanish explanations.
Bring your completion certificate (OL 256A), your identification, and the $16 fee — and book the exam while the course is fresh; the certificate is valid for a year, but memory is not. The full licensing sequence around the exam is in our step-by-step guide.
One slice of the contracts-and-disclosures area is brand new: the CARS Act (SB 766), in force since October 1, 2026, rewrote the cancellation, disclosure, and record rules for retail sales — exactly the kind of current law the exam rewards knowing. Once you are licensed, our CARS Act Compliance Pack collects every document the Act requires.
The course opens the moment DMV approval is issued. Founding-list members get first access, the launch prices, and a same-day email as each product becomes available.
