Guide

How to get a car dealer license in California

Ten steps, in the order that actually works. The license itself is one statewide process, run by the DMV's Occupational Licensing division — and most of the pain applicants feel comes from doing the steps out of order, because each step inherits the legal name from the one before it. Here is the whole chain, honestly, including the parts only you can do.

The ten steps

What it costs, roughly

Our side: the $125 course, and — only if you want the paperwork done for you — the $50 Template Kit or Guided Setup at $1,499 / $1,999, all planned launch pricing. The state's side: the $16 exam fee, DMV application and license fees, Live Scan charges, the county DBA filing, and the bond premium the surety sets on your credit. The full line-by-line picture is in our cost breakdown guide.

Common questions

How long does the whole process take?

The course and exam can be finished in days. What stretches the calendar is everything after: entity and DBA filings, the bond, securing and preparing a premises, and DMV processing and inspection scheduling. Applicants who sequence the steps correctly and arrive complete usually measure the path in weeks, not months; applicants who file out of order lose time to rejections and re-filings.

Can I do the whole thing in Spanish?

Almost. Our course teaches in Spanish with the DMV's English terminology taught as vocabulary — but the state's exam itself is administered in English, so the final step is met in English. That is the design: learn in Spanish, pass in English. Renewals, paperwork, and support carry their full value in Spanish.

Do I need a lot before I take the course?

No — and you should not sign a lease first. The course and exam come early in the sequence, your certificate is valid for a year, and the premises step lands better once your entity, DBA, and bond groundwork exists. Order matters more than speed.
